This woven design in particular is made up of lines and blocks. The lines act as the layers of colours seen in a cupcake - the brown acting as the base and the pastels which are popular colour choices for icing.

Metallic yarns are woven in to create the look of glitter icing and sugar coated sweets.

Mulberry’s new campaign is set on Brighton pier. The adverts feature models surrounded by enlarged ‘treats’ such as ice cream and candy which are normally associated with the seaside and summer. This association is reflected in the designers collection - summer dresses and pastel light ‘summer colours.’ 

Louis Vuitton has also gone into pastel colours for this season. With their adverts this time featuring ice-cream, cakes and cake stands.

The S/S Alexander McQueen campaign informed the use of pastel colours in these woven designs. As well as the colours of the icing seen on these cupcakes on a popular cupcake stall in Southampton.

Meadham Kirchhoff S/S2012 at LFW. A show of over-the-top pastel dresses and ”tired cake-like podium and gold curtains.” A childlike, theatrical take on this seasons trends.

The fashion of cake

All designs for this project woven on a block threading set up. 72epi/7inch fabric samples.

With Mulberry, Alexander McQueen and Luis Vuitton giving us pastel colours/cakes and enlarged food in their S/S 2012 collections and promotional material, I can’t help but be inspired by this revival of afternoon tea and the cupcake in fashion this season. Not forgetting the bizarre show by Meadham Kirchoff at LFW displaying playful colours connoting cakes and nostalgia. TV programme; ‘The Great British Bake Off’ recently shown on TV received huge viewings. Specialised cupcake shops are now opening proving to be hugely successful.

Weave set up on a straight threading plan. Emphasis is on the texture and dominance of colour - faded colour in the warp and a rough appeal throughout creates authenticity and a slightly old/worn look to the eye. Fabric intended for interiors.
